Mini tennis is the best way for children to discover tennis in a fun and safe environment. Using softer balls, smaller courts, and a lower net, training becomes accessible and enjoyable for kids.
If you are a parent or a beginner coach, you need clear lesson plans and simple drills that develop coordination, focus, and the love of the game. In this article, I’ll show you a 60-minute training plan for ages 5–8 with the theme “Coordination and Control through Partner Rally”.
Why choose mini tennis for your child?
Mini tennis offers multiple benefits:
- develops basic coordination and motor skills;
- improves balance and focus;
- teaches the first technical skills in tennis;
- builds confidence and love for sports.
Structure of a 60-minute mini tennis lesson
1. Warm-up (10 min)
Coordination games and fun activities: running, relays, tag games, and ball control drills.
2. Technical-motor skills (15 min)
Ball juggling with the racket, dribbling, balance games, and small competitions for racket control.
3. Main theme – Partner rally (25 min)
Step-by-step progression: throw the ball with the hand → pass with the racket → first rallies with bounce → mini-matches with points.
4. Applied game (5 min)
Mini matches in pairs, scoring points for successful rallies.
5. Cool down and reflection (5 min)
Stretching, positive feedback, and a short discussion about what the kids learned.
Tips for parents and beginner coaches
- Focus on play and movement, not perfect technique.
- Always use age-appropriate equipment: light rackets, soft balls, lower nets.
- Praise every small progress.
- Create a positive atmosphere so kids look forward to training.
